Every park in [County] we’ve reviewed. Private hot tubs, dog policies, drive times from the nearest three cities, and honest verdicts on which lodge suits which household.

2h 30 from Manchester 1h 45 from Leeds 4h 15 from London

The Highlands are the most under-visited good-value lodge region in the UK, and the one where the drive-time honesty matters most. Aviemore is 6 hours from Manchester in October and 8 hours 30 on a Friday in July. Once you are there, the rate per week for a hot-tub cabin at Aviemore Lochside or Loch Ness Highland Resort is £300 to £600 lower than the Lake District equivalent, and the walking is arguably better. Below, the parks we would drive that far to reach, plus the ones that only make sense if you were already in Scotland.

Aviemore Lochside · Cairngorms base camp

Cabin park on the shore of Loch Insh, 15 minutes south of Aviemore. Cairngorm National Park on the doorstep, decent restaurant in the village, ski lift at Cairngorm Mountain 20 minutes away in winter.

Loch Ness Highland Resort

Fort Augustus end of Loch Ness. Family lodges with private tubs, on-site kayak hire, walkable to the loch. Better for a week than a long weekend given the drive.
